“First Man” Trailer showcases an early Academy Award frontrunner

On Friday night, the world got their first look at a potential Best Picture possibility when First Man debuted its Trailer. This film, given its pedigree, more or less has to be at the very top of any early set of Oscar predictions. The follow up to La La Land from filmmaker Damien Chazelle pairs him again with Ryan Gosling, this time for a prestige biopic. If anything though, it seems like he’s going back to his Whiplash roots. That combination alone would make any movie worth seeing, but this is something else. You can see the Trailer below, but first, some discussion of the potential Academy Award favorite is in order.

The film is a biopic of Neil Armstrong, arguably the world’s most famous astronaut. Here is the official synopsis that Universal Pictures has provided: “On the heels of their six-time Academy Award-winning smash, La La Land, Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal Pictures’ First Man, the riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost—on Armstrong and on the nation—of one of the most dangerous missions in history. Written by Academy Award® winner Josh Singer (Spotlight), the drama is produced by Wyck Godfrey & Marty Bowen (The Twilight Saga, The Fault in Our Stars) through their Temple Hill Entertainment banner, alongside Chazelle and Gosling. Isaac Klausner (The Fault in Our Stars) executive produces. Amblin Entertainment co-finances the film.” Gosling obviously plays Armstrong, while at home Claire Foy portrays his wife. Chazelle directs the script by Singer, which originally was an adaptation penned by Nicole Perlman. The cast also includes Christopher Abbott, Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke, Ethan Embry, Patrick Fugit, Lukas Haas, Ciarán Hinds, Brian d’Arcy James, Pablo Schreiber, Corey Stoll, Kris Swanberg, and Shea Whigham, among others. Behind the camera is Linus Sandgren, while Tom Cross edits and Justin Hurwitz composed the score for Chazelle.

This movie, judging by the Trailer, looks phenomenal. Important, intense, and full of potentially stunning images, there’s a lot to like here. It’s a step in a new direction for Chazelle, who could cement his A-list status if this is something special. Pairing Foy with Gosling in a period piece could also result in some major sparks. Sure, Oscar voters have been moving away from this sort of thing in recent years, but how much of that is due to not having a flick worth voting for? This one may test that theory in a big way. It really does seem to check all of the boxes, as you’ll see next…

First Man has to be considered an across the board Academy Award contender. Look for a big campaign by Universal, including efforts in Best Picture, Best Director (for Chazelle), Best Actor (for Gosling), Best Actress (for Foy, if she doesn’t go Supporting), Best Supporting Actor (for Chandler and/or Stoll), Best Supporting Actress (for Foy, if she doesn’t go Lead), Best Adapted Screenplay (for Perlman and Singer), Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Hairstyling & Makeup, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Original Score, and Best Visual Effects. Nothing can be accurately predicted right now, but at this moment, these are all distinct possibilities. Essentially, you kind of have to predict it at least for nominations, here in the early summer.

Below you can see the First Man Trailer, in all of its glory. The film will hit theaters in the heart of the awards season on October 12th, so plan on this one getting a lot of buzz in the months to come. This movie could be the next La La Land, Oscar attention wise, just with the spin of Chazelle’s Whiplash, on a giant budget. Time will tell. For now, it’s one to hotly anticipate. Give it a look below and sit tight for lots more on the flick. We’re going to be talking about Chazelle and Gosling’s new collaboration, that’s for sure…
