South by Southwest seems to be jumping this year. Yesterday saw the debut of Olivia Wilde’s first directorial outing, the teen comedy Booksmart, which has received raves so far. Today, Annapurna dropped a Red Band Trailer for the film, piggybacking off of that SXSW reception. We’ll show you that Trailer at the end of this post, and trust me when I say this will convince you that my colleagues at the festival were not exaggerating. Booksmart appears to be the real deal and not just the announcement of Wilde as an exciting filmmaker, but also potentially a comedy classic in the making.
The movie is a comedy about two well behaved high school girls finally behaving badly. The IMDb synopsis says the following about it: “2 academic superstars and best friends who, on the eve of their high school graduation, realize they should have worked less and played more. Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram 4 years of fun into 1 night.” We’ll folly Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) as they finally break out of their shells and have a wild night to remember. Insert moments of hilarity, as well as a sense of finally discovering who you are and what’s important to you. Olivia Wilde makes her directorial debut here, directing a script by the quartet of Susanna Fogel, Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins, and Katie Silberman. Cinematography is by Jason McCormick, while the supporting players here includes Will Forte, Skyler Gisondo, Lisa Kudrow, Billie Lourd, Jason Sudeikis, Jessica Williams, and more. Wilde has assembled quite the cast for her first feature.
Going by the Red Band Trailer, this film looks not just to be hilarious, but witty as well. The intelligence on display is notable, as it will help set the project apart from other comedies. This seems like way more than just the sort of “Superbad with girls” description it initially sounded like. Dever and Feldstein are young actresses well deserving of leading role showcases, so seeing them anchor this flick is rather delightful. Wilde’s filmmaking seems smooth and confident, though we’ll get to witness more of that when the final product is revealed. This Trailer just suggests how good it likely is, something the first reviews have doubled down on.
Wilde has long been a diverse and talented actress, someone due more credit than she receives, but this move towards directing may finally get her true cinematic respect. She’s a veteran of the industry and constantly makes interesting choices. Just look at her decision to make a directorial debut with this subject matter. Booksmart might not be the obvious choice, but it sure seems like it’s the right one. The movie will speak for itself and then Wilde will truly have her moment. Hollywood will be hers for the taking in just a couple of months, that much sure seems to be the case…
You can see the Red Band Trailer for Booksmart next. We’re still a few months away form it coming out, as it has a scheduled May 24th release date, but there’s still plenty of reason to be excited for this one. Dever, Feldstein, and Wilde should all be headed toward new heights when this hits theaters. The film just looks absolutely hilarious, with a whip smart attitude to boot. Be warned, this Red Band is Not Safe For Work, so make sure you can watch it safely. If you can, enjoy and prepare yourself for something incredibly funny. Take a look:
