Trailer for ‘Vice’ reveals Adam McKay’s biopic of Dick Cheney

Earlier today, at long last the Trailer dropped for Vice. Yes, after having spent most of the year as a speculated X factor, Adam McKay’s latest film has revealed itself to us. Making a movie about Dick Cheney would be a risky endeavor for anyone, though McKay is pretty fearless. As such, we have an A-list filled look at one of the most controversial men of the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition, we potentially have a very Academy Award friendly flick. More on that in a bit, and of course you’ll be able to see the Trailer at the end of this piece, but first…we discuss!

The film is, of course, a biopic of Dick Cheney (Christian Bale), in all his shady glory. The official synopsis on IMDb is simply: “The story of Dick Cheney, the most powerful Vice President in history, and how his policies changed the world as we know it.” We’ll watch as Cheney gains power as a political operative, CEO, and then as Vice President to George W. Bush (Sam Rockwell). Plot wise, there still is a lot to discover, which strikes me as a good thing. Notable in the Trailer are Amy Adams as Dick’s wife Lynne Cheney, as well as Steve Carell, playing former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. McKay writes and directs, with the rest of the cast including the likes of Bill Camp, LisaGay Hamilton, Justin Kirk, Eddie Marsan, Don McManus, Tyler Perry, Alison Pill, Jesse Plemons, Lily Rabe, and Shea Whigham. Greig Fraser handles the cinematography, while the score comes from Nicholas Britell. Count Brad Pitt and Will Ferrell among the producers here too. Everyone involved looks to be doing top notch work.

From the looks of the Trailer, the cast is doing extraordinary work. Bale literally disappears into the role of Cheney. It’s cliched to say and a hyperbole as well, but it’s just true. Carell and Rockwell look fantastic as well, with Adams reliably strong too. They all could find themselves in Oscar contention, as you’ll see next. McKay has made a fun looking flick that likely also will hit harder than expected. In his hands, a portrait of Cheney that makes you laugh and makes you angry is possible. The Trailer is even better than expected, which is something, considering the hype.

Oscar wise, there’s no reason not to expect Vice to be a major awards player. Annapurna Pictures will likely give this a huge push, campaigning in Best Picture, Best Director (for McKay), Best Actor (for Bale), Best Supporting Actor (for Carell and/or Rockwell), Best Supporting Actress (for Adams), Best Original Screenplay (also for McKay), Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, and Best Original Score. Bale in Actor seems like a no brainer push to me, along with Picture and Original Screenplay. This could easily do as well as The Big Short did, though it all depends on how voters respond to its tone.

You can see the Vice Trailer next, and boy is it something. Seriously, even with such a long lead up time, it still will blow you away. December 25th can’t come soon enough. It’ll be one of the last Academy Award hopefuls to screen, so it could be too late breaking to really impact the race, but then again…maybe not? We’ll figure that out in the days, weeks, and months to come. For now, just check out the Trailer and again marvel at what Bale is doing. You would never know it was him. McKay looks to have done it once again. Behold…
