Box Office Report For May 31-June 2

Welcome back to the weekly box office report! Each and every Sunday, you can expect a look at what made the most money in theaters, as well as just how all of the new releases fared. This week, a trio of new releases entered the marketplace, led by a massive sequel in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. In competition was the horror outing Ma and the musical biopic Rocketman. How did they all do? Let us take a look right now at just that…

Taking the top spot was Godzilla: King of the Monsters, though not with the gigantic haul befitting the titan. Taking in only about $49 million, it was not able to assert its dominance in a way that suggests a strong future for the franchise. The film likely won’t have strong legs either. Next year brings Godzilla vs. Kong, though that does seem like it’ll be the end of the line for the series.

Moving down to number two was last week’s champ, the live action version of Aladdin. Dropping over 53% to $42.3 million, this still is a solid number for Disney. Without question, audiences are delighting in this new take on their animated classic. Look for it to cross the $200 million mark next weekend.

Coming in at number three, with an estimated $25 million, was the Elton John biopic Rocketman. Even if it’s not making Bohemian Rhapsody type numbers, this was a fairly good opening, to the point where it has actually exceeded studio expectations. With strong legs in the weeks to come, it’s possible that this could even turn out to be a viable Academy Award player…

The fourth place position went to Ma, the little horror outing from Tate Taylor, with Octavia Spencer in the starring role. A five million dollar budget translated into an $18.2 million opening, so producer Jason Blum and Blumhouse are very pleased. Blum certainly knows how to execute these sorts of movies, that’s for sure.

*Nothing of note opened in limited release this week, box office wise. Maybe next weekend?*
