Yesterday, another South by Southwest comedy dropped a Red Band Trailer, hot on the heels of the one for Booksmart. This time, it was for Good Boys, another SXSW debut. This comedic romp also got some really strong notices at SXSW, if not the out and out raves. Still, this appears to be rather hilarious looking, since it’s hard not to make small kids being bad funny. The laugh riot of a Trailer hit the web about 24 hours ago, and we’ll have it for you next. First though, let us discuss a bit and tease out the humor to be found within…
The comedy is a raunchy junior high school set romp. According to IMDb, this is the plot synopsis: “Three sixth grade boys ditch school and embark on an epic journey while carrying accidentally stolen drugs, being hunted by teenage girls, and trying to make their way home in time for their first kissing party.” The sixth graders are Max (Jacob Tremblay), Lucas (Keith L. Williams), and Thor (Brady Noon), who will engage in some very bad behavior over the course of the picture. Hilarity seems to ensue. Gene Stupnitsky directs and co-writes here with Lee Eisenberg. Cinematography here is by Jonathan Furmanski, while the rest of the cast includes Enid-Raye Adams, Millie Davis, Will Forte, Midori Francis, Molly Gordon, Lil Rel Howery, and more. Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen are among the multiple producers.
It doesn’t look like high art, to be fair, but Good Boys does look really damn funny. The Trailer certainly suggests as much. Could it be a one note joke? Potentially, but if the joke is funny enough, who cares? Maybe I’m without class, but kids cursing and engaging in adult behavior amuses me. Even this Red Band has fun with that joke, as producer Seth Rogen informs the three leads that they’re too young to watch the very Trailer they star in. That won’t be what the film actually depicts, but this even younger take on Superbad has my attention. Plain and simple, it looks like a laugh riot to yours truly. I’m sure I’m not alone, either.
2019 could be shaping up to be a really nice year for comedic efforts. We’ve already had Isn’t It Romantic, The Upside, and What Men Want, while the coming months will showcase Booksmart and Long Shot, in addition to Good Boys. This is only the tip of the iceberg too, as there are plenty of other comedies scheduled for release. It’s always a delight when funny flicks flood the marketplace. The cream will always rise to the top, so we’ll see which end up critically and financially embraced, but the trio that played over the past few days at SXSW have a nice head start, that’s for sure.
You can see the Red Band Trailer for Good Boys next, and as always with these sorts of things, just know that it’s definitely Not Safe For Work. That bit of housekeeping aside, we’re going to whet your appetite for this one. The film doesn’t hit theaters until August 16th, so we’ve got quite a wait on our hands. For now though, we have the Red Band Trailer. The movie looks like it could be in line to become a late summer smash hit. SXSW certainly seems to be an effective launching pad. At the moment, the Trailer is a nice start. Give it a look and see what you think…
Here now is the Good Boys Red Band Trailer, in all of its filthy glory:
