Equally adept at original content and sequels, Pixar is truly the major force in animation these days. A powerhouse with Academy Awards and billions of dollars at the box office to their credit, they largely can do no wrong. This month, they’ll put out one of their highest profile sequels ever in Toy Story 4, but after that, the studio has said they’re doubling down on original ideas. Well, they’ve released a Teaser Trailer for one of those, next year’s epic from them, Onward. Will Pixar have another hit on their hands? You can see the Teaser for the film at the end of the post, but spoiler alert: they will.
The movie is Pixar’s 2020 animated effort, centering on a fantastical world. The official plot synopsis from IMDb is as follows: “Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot, go on an journey to discover if there is still a little magic left out there in order to spend one last day with their father, who died when they were too young to remember him.” Judging by that, it sure sounds like the mixture of action, emotion, and hilarity that are the hallmarks of their flicks. Ian Lightfoot (voice of Tom Holland) and Barley Lightfoot (Chris Pratt) could very well be the next iconic on screen duo for the animation giants. More is still to be revealed, but the rest of the voice cast announced so far includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer. Dan Scanlon writes and directs, with the score coming from the duo of Jeff Danna and Mychael Danna.
Judging by the Teaser, Pixar seems to have built an incredible world here. The film’s story isn’t given any attention yet, but the world is shown in largely hilarious fashion. There are really funny moments, like the dragon as a pet, or the unicorns as roaming menace. Then, the throwaway shot of an ad offering “cash for gems” really tickled me, to the point where the image is included here in the post. Plus, you have to figure that Tom Holland and Chris Pratt will have some solid chemistry together, as they’ve been involved in a pair of Marvel Cinematic Universe offerings, last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, and of course this year’s Avengers: Endgame.
This move towards more original fair could very well herald in a new golden age for the company. If you look at their history, the only original idea not to be fully embraced was Cars (and possibly A Bug’s Life). It’s only been with some of their sequels where it’s been posited that they’re second tier products. Presumably, the animation house is hoping that Toy Story 4 is a first rate sequel, allowing them to put franchises to bed for a bit. If so, Onward will be the flagship towards a whole new era. Plus, if it’s as good as they’re known for, it’ll contend for Oscar love just like all the rest have.
You can see this Trailer next for Onward, but be prepared to wait a while to actually see the flick. It’ll be just under a year until it hits, as Pixar has a March 6th release date scheduled for 2020. The earlier than usual date could be interesting, but not really a factor right now. For the moment, in Pixar we trust. This looks great and I can’t wait to see more. We will in the coming months, likely after Toy Story 4 opens, but for now, we just have this Teaser to feast upon. Give it a look and see what you think…
