Trailer for “Beautiful Boy” suggests an awards player
Last week, a fairly baity Trailer hit the web. It’s for a film called Beautiful Boy, which hopes to be a big time Oscar contender. The material certainly suggests as much. Having Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet in the lead roles, based on notable and best selling memoirs (yes, more than one, as you’ll see below), it all sounds Academy Award friendly. We’ll find out for sure in the fall, and we’ll be discussing its chances today, but also on hand in this piece is the aforementioned Trailer. You’ll be able to see that below, but of course, first comes some discussion…
The movie is a true life drama, one that seems sure to tug at your heartstrings on multiple occasions. IMDb lists the plot as such: “Beautiful Boy is a movie starring Steve Carell, Timothée Chalamet, and Maura Tierney. Based on the best-selling pair of memoirs from father and son David and Nic Sheff, Beautiful Boy chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival, relapse, and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years.” David (Carell) and Nic (Chalamet) were once incredibly close, as close as any father and son. Over the years, however, addiction comes between them. Insert any number of harrowing moments. As just mentioned, David’s memoir Beautiful Boy, which gives the film its title, and Nic’s memoir Tweak, provide the inspiration here. Felix Van Groeningen co-writes with Luke Davies and directs, while the supporting cast, in addition to Maura Tierney, includes Kaitlyn Dever, Amy Ryan, and more. If its well executed, this certainly seems like something to be hotly anticipating.
From the looks of this Trailer, Carell and Chalamet appear in top form. Both are former Academy Award nominees, so either could wind up in play again, if not the pair of them. More on that next, but this does seem to be character driven, so a lot will ride on the actors. They seem more than up to the challenge, so that’s a plus. Carell has been searching for a return to Oscar contention over the past year or two, while Chalamet is a freshly minted nominee. If they’re as good as potentially advertised here, perhaps one could emerge as a possible winner?
Awards wise, Beautiful Boy is tailor made to contend for Academy votes. Assuming the quality is there, look for campaigns in Best Picture, Best Director (for Van Groeningen), Best Actor (for Carell and/or Chalamet), Best Actress (for Tierney, unless she goes Supporting), Best Supporting Actor (also for Carell and/or Chalamet, depending on category placement), Best Supporting Actress (for Ryan and/or Tierney, unless the latter goes Lead), Best Adapted Screenplay (for Davies and Van Groeningen), and Best Film Editing. One interesting story to potentially follow will be who goes Lead and who goes Supporting. Right now, it feels like an absolute flick of the coin, so that’ll be something to watch when the season gets underway.
This film sure seems like it could be an Oscar favorite. At the very least, the potential is there for something voters fall head over heels in love with. We’re still about four months out from release, so we won’t know for sure until it debuts somewhere, likely at one of the big fall film festivals. If nothing else, it’s a movie with a lot of acting talent on display. For now, give the Trailer a look and sit tight for lots more on this flick. It’ll be one we definitely are talking about in the fall, so check back then…
